簡介
香港汽車保險局於一九八零年在本港註冊成為一有限保證之法定機構，並於一九八一年二月一日正式開始服務。
所有經由香港政府批准承保汽車保險之保險公司均須成為本局之會員。
背景
根據汽車保險(第三者風險)條例，所有車輛車主必須投保在道路上使用車輛時發生意外之第三者傷亡保險。
以往若干意外實例中，受害人在意外發生後未能獲得法律上應得之賠償，原因是肇事車輛沒有保險或車主因違反若干保單條款而引致保單無效或保險公司因沒有償債能力導致其發出的保單變得無效。
宗旨
" 本局之宗旨是確保在汽車保險(第三者風險)條例適用情況底下，在交通意外中因駕駛人疏忽而導致傷亡之受害人或其家屬可以獲得法律上應得之賠償。 "
